I traveled to an abandoned village in Southwestern Toyama prefecture to locate a stone monument reporting on the history of the town and why it was abandoned. The town was ultimately abandoned in 1973, and this monument was erected in 2009. Below is the transcription and translation of the monument. I write about the town in the post about Ueda village.
ニッ屋村
Futatsuya Village
昔前田某という落ち武者と山伏の海東寺の二軒が住みついたので「ニツ屋村」と村名がついたといわれている
It is said that the village was named "Futatsuya Village" because two houses, belonging to a defeated warrior named Maeda and a mountain ascetic hermit (Yamabushi) named Kaito-ji, who had settled there long ago.
元和五年(一六一九) せと与に属し 役屋数七高五七石金外
In 1619 (Genna 5), the Seto domain was established. The town received 7 koku per household, and 57 koku worth of land.
寛文一〇年(一六七〇) 村御印では草高八二石外
In 1670 (Kanbun 10), the village seal said it received 82 koku of land.
この時の古文書は現在も保管されている
The old documents from that time are still kept today.
文政八年(一八二五) 能美組 天保一〇年(一八三九)以降
In 1825 (Bunsei 8), the town became under control of Nomi-gumi, and continued after 1839 (Tenpo 10).
山田組に属した嘉永六年(一八五三)二二軒
In 1853 (Kaei 6), 22 houses belonged to the Yamada-gumi.
明治五年(一八七二)三〇軒
In 1872 (Meiji 5), 30 houses.
正德二年(一七一二)砺波部社号帳に権現一社とある
In 1712 (Shodo 2), the Tonami Shrine register lists one Gongen (Buddhist) shrine in the town.
西側の台地に熊野社として祀られ
The diety was enshrined on the western plateau as a Kumano shrine.
平成二年(一九九〇)北野天満宮境内に還座された
In 1990, it was returned to the grounds of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine.
明治一二年(一八七九) 村号が上田村に改められた
In 1879 (Meiji 12), the village name was changed to Ueda Village.
藩政末に牛が十九頭も飼育され 小瀬峠越えて五ヶ山へ米や塩の運搬が盛んであった五ヶ山産の和紙や煙硝なども運ばれた
At the end of the feudal government, 19 cows were kept, and rice and salt were actively transported over Ose Pass to Gokayama. Japanese paper and gunpowder from Gokayama were also transported.
これらの作業を「歩荷」と称した
These jobs were titled "porters."
町(城端)からニッ屋まで二里 町から小瀬まで四里一七丁 ニッ屋から西赤尾四里である
Transport from the Johana Town to Ueda cost 2 ri. From town to Ose Pass, transport cost 4 ri 17 cho. From Ueda to Nishiakao Village, it was 4 ri.
明治以降 郵便物を五ヶ山に運ぶ「逓信隊」梨谷で採掘された
After the Meiji period, the Teishintai (or Communication Corps) transported mail to Gokayama via Nashidani.
石灰を牛の背に乗せて町まで運ぶ「牛歩荷」が生計を助けた
"Oxen Porters" were people who made their living carrying lime mined from the mountains to town using cattle.
大正初期には四十鼓戸あったが
In the early Taisho period (from 1912), there were 40 households.
八幡道路開通や国道三〇四号への昇格等で 昭和四十六年には二十二戸 昭和四十八年には八戸となり
With the opening of the Yahata Road and its promotion to National Route 304, the number of households was reduced to 22 in 1971 (Showa 46), and only 8 households in 1973 (Showa 48).
町近辺の理休地内折田林に全戸集団転居した
At that time, all remaining families relocated en masse to Oritabayashi in Rikyu area near the town.
翌四十九年(一九七四)閉村式を行った
The following year, 1974 (Showa 49), the village closed down.
