For the most part, I lifted the ideas for this lesson from my previous schools since we had already started it. The grammar was simply continued from the previous lesson, too. After doing the standard T-Shirt Quiz, which comes from the recommended lesson plans, I thought it would be more fun if the students had the chance to draw the T-Shirts rather than simply recognize and repeat. That carried into the Lesson 4 and 5 review lesson at the end of the unit.
Introduce the Colors and Shapes vocabulary. Many of the colors should already be known by the students. And they should know heart, and star. But the other shapes tend to be the actual new vocab for the students. Circle, Square, Triangle and Diamond.
Continue practicing the vocabulary, and start describing the T-Shirts in the book using the vocabulary.
Introduce the T-Shirts Quiz. This is simply the 3 Hints Quiz. Choose 3 aspects of one of the T-Shirts (whether it be color or shape), and then the students must guess.
Drawing T-Shirts Quiz. Students will listen to the colors and shapes I describe and color them on the worksheet. Then they'll tell each other what to draw.
Combining the new categories of objects, I have the students interview each other about What fruit, animal, sport, shape, and color they like.
"What fruit do you like?"
The Tagline for this lesson is "What do you like?" and since I had just introduced the song 2 classes prior, I used this song for the entire lesson, too. After singing it way too many times, and throughout the year in my 3rd and 4th grade classes, I'm still not tired of it.
I created my own flash cards in photoshop for this lesson. I just created the shapes and colored them, and I tried to cover all the shapes and colors from the lesson. The flash cards in the book, don't cover everything, so I felt like I had to make my own. I think for this coming year, I might just make everything using construction paper instead, since the colors in these flashcards aren't as dynamic as the construction paper.
Again, I mostly modeled this lesson after what I had done in my previous schools, which comes from the recommended lesson plans. As time went on, I had the idea that the students would probably enjoy drawing out of the T-Shirts, and that worked brilliantly. They really got into their drawings. And things went especially well, when I asked them to draw Mickey Mouse on one of the T-Shirts. During the group activity, the students had each other draw the most ridiculous things. :)
Drawing really inspired me to incorporate much more arts and crafts into my lessons as time went on.
