After Fruits and Vegetables, I knew that my next lesson was going to use Animals. I commissioned artwork from one of my friends, and gave her a list of animals. I choose the vocabulary based on pets, common animals, and a few exotic ones.
It was hard to trim the list down to only 16, and in class, there were several other suggestions students made that I didn't include, such as Monkey, Lion, and Pig. And others such as Unicorn, Pegasus, Dragon, and Dinosaur. But I'm pretty happy with the ones I choose.
For the first class, I introduce the grammar, and play the Timer game. One of the key points of the lesson was giving the students the opportunity to color one of the animals, and then use that drawing in upcoming lessons. So, I let the students choose one animal, and then they colored it for the rest of the class.
Using their drawings, we did an Interview Game practicing "Do you like __?" I coupled the Interview using the Census game, too, so students had more of a purpose to do the interview. Plus, the Census game always gets great reactions no matter which grade I do it in.
Introduce the Colors to the class. I simply used the same colors from the 5年生 lesson, but I didn't use the same flash cards, since those had shapes, too. I made these flash cards from construction paper, and they looked WAY better than the 5年生. So much so, that I plan on redoing the 5年生 ones for the next year.
Combine the Animal and Color vocabulary, and have the students describe their drawings from the previous class. Then play Bingo. ^_^ Though, time became very short for Bingo. :(
I simply continued with the same song from the previous lesson.
As mentioned above, I commissioned artwork from my friends back in the US, and she was happy to oblige in exchange for some 'Attack on Titan' merchandise. I didn't want them colored because I wanted to give the students the chance to color them.
It was pretty fun. The students thought the drawings were very interesting, though the Bear and Hamster looked different than what they expected. They loved coloring in the pictures, though we usually had very little time left at the end of the class, so they had to work fast. Many students had interesting interpretations. :)
The final class of this lesson turned out a little difficult to time. Combining the animals and colors is easy, so that took no time. So, I spent more time describing the students' animals, and handing the drawing back to the students. Then we started working on the Bingo sheet, and some students took forever to color everything. One class didn't even finish before the bell, so we had to skip it. :(
