Decades ago, the city of Takayama and the region of Hida had way way more schools. The area is so wide that the pockets of communities each had their own schools. Over time, these communities diminished as their children grew up and moved to larger cities. Students in these distant communities bussed to the more centralized schools, and the distant schools were closed.
Well, mostly closed anyways. Many of these schools were turned into community centers which held various classes and seminars for the community.
I visited one such school in the southeastern areas of Asahi town.
