Sugar Loaf Hill 慶良間チージ

The Battle of Sugar Loaf Hill was one of the deadliest skirmishes of the overall Battle of Okinawa. The Americans made landfall in Okinawa on April 1st 1945. This was north of the main city and concentration of Japanese forces. The Americans took over the airfields nearby cutting the Japanese army in half. The north had fewer units, so the Americans secured it without much trouble.

With all the remaining Japanese forces in the south, they put up their heaviest resistance to the incoming Americans and one of those earliest battles happened on Sugar Loaf Hill.

There's not a whole lot at this site now. Just a plaque commemorating the spot, and a decent view. My hotel was nearby.
