Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters

In the center of Naha, to prevent its buildings from being easy targets by planes and artillery fire, the Japanese navy dug and built a series of tunnels and rooms underground and used this as its headquarters for the Japanese navy.

After the American Army made landfall in Okinawa on April 1st 1945, and continued to push back the Japanese forces, it was clear that the headquarters would be overrun. Several high ranking members of military shots themselves to avoid capture and accept their failure in these rooms.
