Shuri Castle 首里城

Shuri Castle is one of the most unique castles in Japan. It is a traditionally built castle, but not for any Japanese kingdom or using a traditional Japanese method. The castle was the main palace for the Ryukyu Kingdom, so it was built in the traditional methods of the Ryukyuans in their traditional island style.

I visited the castle during my 2014 vacation to Okinawa. 5 years later, in 2019, a large fire broke out and destroyed most of the main hall. As of 2025, it is still under construction and restoration.

Below are the photos I took from walking around the castle compound and inside.
