Flooding and damage caused by the recent typhoon. The rainfall was apparently the heaviest Takayama has experienced in the last 10 years. The river behind my apartment grew over six feet high, nearly overflowing in some parts. In other areas of Takayama, the high levels and violent surge washed out the adjacent road.
Kiyomi was one of the most damaged neighborhoods. All the rain water rushes down the mountains, through neighborhoods of houses to collect in the Kamakami River. The rushing water often brings rocks and other debris with it, knocking away more rocks. Flowing through the violent river, these rocks start chipping away at the retaining walls until they collapse.
